Can't ping mysql

When I first installed mysql I successfully pinged it with "mysqladmin ping" However, now when I try to ping it, I get the following error:

/usr/local/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

I start mysql the same way I did last time with:

/usr/local/bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql --datadir=/nsm/mysql &

Also when I try netstat it doesn't show mysql. Does anyone know how I can get this working?

Did you set a password for root? If so, did you try passing a password in your mysqladmin ping command? And why are you root? Should really never be root unless you have to, setup sudo and if you need to connect to mysql as root, pass the -u root option when connecting.

Thanks, I can ping it now with

mysqladmin -u root -p ping
Enter password:
mysqld is alive

However, information from Snort isn't getting into the database for some reason.
