2 newbie questions re: apache

First, having installed the full version of slackware, is apache somewhere on my computer? I tried running "which apache" and "locate apache," which output the following:

bash-3.1# which apache
which: no apache in (/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib/java/bin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib/qt/bin:/usr/share/texmf/bin)
bash-3.1# locate apache
/var/www/htdocs/manual/programs/apachectl.html
/var/www/htdocs/manual/images/apache_header.gif
/var/www/icons/apache_pb2.gif
/var/www/icons/apache_pb.gif
/var/www/icons/apache_pb2_ani.gif
/var/www/icons/apache_pb2.png
/var/www/icons/apache_pb.png
/usr/share/zsh/4.3.10/functions/_apachectl
/usr/share/vim/vim72/syntax/apachestyle.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim72/syntax/apache.vim
/usr/share/apps/katepart/syntax/apache.xml
/usr/sbin/apachectl
/usr/man/man8/apachectl.8.gz
bash-3.1#

If it is present, how do I install it? If it isn't present how do I get it?

Second, once I have a working apache web server setup with an ext3 partition mounted to /home, will clients whose websites I host still be able to save Microsoft Office applications in their home directories? If no, what's the easiest way to allow this without compromising system security?

Hi -

1. The process your Apache web server runs is usually called "httpd" (as in "HTTP Daemon".

2. Sure - MS Office documents are just binary files as far as the web server is concerned. No reason users shouldn't be able to save, retrieve and re-save them on your server.

'Hope that helps .. PSM

Taking a bit of a guess, I would suggest to you that apachectl is likely to be a control script for apache. (Is this confirmed by your reading of the man page???)

If the man page doesn't help, does reading the control script itself give you any clues?
