pop3s and root

Is it possible to use pop3s to check e-mail for the root account? I have a Linux box on my lan and was messing around. I wanted to check the root account remotely for nightly maint reports. I tried to do it but it seemed access to the root account was turned off by default.

Exclamation a solution

There's probably a dozen ways to accomplish what you want. I don't think it's neccessary to use pop3 as you can set up a remote login program that would be less complicated. But if you want to set up a mail transfer program I think Sendmail has the capability. (It has the capability to do just about anything!)

POP3 as root? You know that POP3 uses PLAINTEXT? So your root password will come UNENCRYPTED over the wire. Do you reall think that is a good idea?

Markus,

I'm using this on a local LAN. I'm really just playing around with the box trying to see what I can do with it. I use POP3S for all my real e-mail.
