logging system failed

I am using Red Hat 8.0. After an instance of harddisk failure and recovered by using fsck, the log system seems stopped. Here is what I found now :

1. in /var/log, files : messages, secure, boot.log, cron have 0 size since the date of harddisk recovered
2. however in /var/log/httpd/access_log appears normal
3. when the console is idle, it displays a few login error message on the screen which should be in /var/log/secure
4. tripwire report shows no change which is abnormal as the log files should be changing everyday.

Can anyone tell me what happened ?

Thank you.

It appears that the syslog has stopped, I manually restarted it and it seems working now.
