logging out as root freezes system!

I have debian sarge installed, when i log out as root, and after confirming logout, the screen turns black and the mouse pointer freezes, the only way to recover the system is by turning off the power.
this only happens when logging out as root, logging out as a user works without a problem, any ideas on how to overcome this problem, or any suggestions about which logfiles to look at would be appreciated. thanks,
anton.

logging into X11 as root is one of the most dangerous things a linux user could do, and it's one of the most common mistakes made by newbies... you should NEVER log into X11 as root... EVER...

in a way, helping you with this issue is a catch-22 situation, because by helping you fix the issue we could be doing more harm to you than by not helping you...

thanks for your reply,
Yes i'm aware of the dangers logging in as root can do, mostly i'm logged in as a user, however i have a problem which i just cannot
ignore, and fixing that problem will help me understand linux better. please, can anyone give me a pointer to where i should look, what i should do? which log files might give me a clue as to what is wrong?
thanks
anton.
