Configuring snort for compilation will not succeed under user root

I am installing snort and running into a strange problem. Using Amazon Linux (CentOS 6) I need to configure and compile snort. For snort you need the daq libraries. So I configured and compiled daq, which needed a few additional libraries (libdnet, pcre, zlib), added them with yum and daq compiles and installes like a charm. I added /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig -v So the daq libraries are added.

Now here's the strange situation: Configuring snort as the root user gives the following error: checking for daq_load_modules in -ldaq_static... no

ERROR! daq_static library not found, go get it from http://www.snort.org/.

However, running the same configure command as the ec2-user (a regular user) runs without a problem.

So I have a solution, but I don't understand why configure will not succeed as the root user. Anyone that can help me out?

usually root has different environment, so probably some variable is not set (or set differently). It is normal, you should not use root to compile!
