I have also problem like simon when chroot apache on Redhat 9.
[root@test init.d]# ./httpd start
Starting httpd: httpd: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName
[ OK ]

but when check process:
[root@test init.d]# ps -ax |grep httpd
24522 pts/0 S 0:00 grep httpd

It's not run.

Anyone can help me. Thanks you.
