Sounds like there is something wrong with you x-org.conf file.
Post the contents of your /etc/X11/Xorg/Xorg.conf file here.

You know a way to copy the conf file to a windows partition? When I try I get a message saying "cannot copy to readonly folder".

If your Linux partition is formatted ext2 or ext3, you could use Explore2fs to get to the file under Windows.
