can't start x, xorg.conf read only, no root access

i just installed ubuntu 5.10 and got an error when starting the x server saying no screen found. from what i understand i need to change driver from ati to radeon. however, xorg.conf is read only and vim tells me it can't write the changes. i have no root b/c this is the first reboot after install, no root pass was asked for on install, and i assume that gets handled after the first reboot. chmod and chown don't work. any ideas as to how i can get this changed?

IIRC ubuntu uses sudo, so try "sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf"
