xorg.conf problem


hi I am as fresh as can be to linux
Ihave installed UBUNTU 8.04 on a PORTEGE 3440CT laptop it seems to be working then installed GNOME Desktop environment and that installed fine try to run startx and i get nothing exept a fatal errrrror 104 (server error)and still no desktop all i know is that the vga is (savage)cant work it out can somebody help

Can you post the whole error exactly as it is?

btw, Ubuntu 9.04 is the latest version --- you might want to try it

99% problem with xorg.conf
please post your
Code:
/etc/xorg.conf
and log from Xorg. if i remember corretnly it was something like
Code:
/var/log/Xorg0.log
etc.

Did you install Ubuntu without gnome? Or how did you proceed? I don't see how you could have installed it without gnome. Did you use bootstrap Ubuntu?

You are very fresh to linux, how come you are starting x with startx? With normal Ubuntu the command line should be something your rarely need.

Please give some more details on your (unconventional) install.
