Sorry, this will be rather vague...
I'm not trying to insult your intelligence, but make sure it's trying to sign on as an AIM acct. I had the same problem trying to sign on with my hotmail acct. I felt like suchadork 'cause I kept receiving that authentication failed error message and then realized I had to go to something like options and then use the drop down box to select msn for hotmail.
I'm not on my linux box right now so I can't be more specific but I hope this helps.
Another thing you may want to try is upgrading to the latest verision of GAIM. Hotmail, and Yahoo recently changed their login procedures, so older versions of GAIM, Trillion, etc, won't work until they are updated.
i was all in the options... and i didnt see update. I am pretty sure i am on aim in options.... i even tried my name without a space cause sometimes it dont like the spaces

That's right - I forgot about that upgrade. Someone put a new copy on our server at work. I needed help upgrading because the new Gaim conflicted with quite a few programs (nothing that seemed important... ). As each confliction came up I removed them one at a time until it ran smoothly. I don't know if it was the best approach but I was able to sign back into my Hotmail acct. The whole process was quite complicated for a n00b like me but everything you needed to know was basically right there on the screen as it scrolled down.
Gaim still works with MSN provided you're using a recent version (0.71 is our current version), and you have SSL libraries properly installed. We support either Mozilla NSS or GNUTLS. Check the FAQ ( http://gaim.sourceforge.net/faq.php ) for more information.

I think the most simple way to update GAIM would be:
1) Follow the link that gowanstl27 posted above, and download the latest .rpm file
2) Open a terminal and type "su" followed by root's password
3) Go to the directory where you saved the gaim RPM file
4) Type " rpm -Uvh gaim-filename.rpm
After that re-run GAIM and you should be able to log in. You may or may not need to re-enter your accounts, but you should now be able to connect.
