Won't boot to xwin

I have a fresh install of kubuntu 8.10. Everything is fine except for the fact that every time I shut the machine down for a few minutes, when I reboot, it boots to a prompt. It says something about looking for an image on the drive and not finding one so doing a normal boot, then just boots to console login. After I log in I can start the graphical environment manually just fine. The only oddity is that when I am running in kde, the shutdown and restart options in the menu are gone.

Now when the machine boots to this prompt, sudo poweroff seems to solve the problem. I give the thing a few seconds and turn it back on, and it will boot just fine.

Is is something to do with a power management setting or something? I've poked around the bios settings a bit and have not been able to figure anything out. Thanks in advance.
