Will Re-Scanning Controller Detect Broken Disks

If I execute the following command:

Code:
echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host<X>/scan
Can the scan kick out a disk that might fail?

I'm running raid10 and a disk broke, when I tried replacing the new the disk I got the following:

Code:
end_device-4:9: mptsas: ioc0: removing ssp device: fw_channel 0, fw_id 3, phy 3,sas_addr 0x5000c5003a458475
phy-4:3: mptsas: ioc0: delete phy 3, phy-obj (0xffff88041e9d3c00)
port-4:9: mptsas: ioc0: delete port 9, sas_addr (0x5000c5003a458475)
mptsas: ioc0: attaching ssp device: fw_channel 0, fw_id 3, phy 3, sas_addr 0x5000c5007421ede9
scsi target4:0:10: mptsas: ioc0: delete device: fw_channel 0, fw_id 3, phy 3, sas_addr 0x5000c5007421ede9
and a smartctl -i gives the following:
Code:
smartctl 5.41 2011-06-09 r3365 [x86_64-linux-3.2.0-4-amd64] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-11 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net

Smartctl open device: /dev/sde failed: No such device
Previously, I was able to echo and rescan the disk no problem. My worry here is that another disk looks like it's about to fail:
Code:

Could running the above command scan and kick sdc? I don't want sdc to be kicked because it will cause my server to crash.

Any help is appreciated!

It shouldn't. The disk responds to the controller, and that is all the scan is doing (it retrieves the disks identification make/model). It doesn't try to read the disk.

As far as I know, the only time a disk wouldn't be identified is if the disk itself doesn't respond at all. If that were the case, you wouldn't even get read errors being reported.
