Why is USB such a b#tch?

It seems that it is very difficult to get USB devices to work with linux. Is it true, or is it just me?
I have red hat 7.2. I have posted many questions here with regards to this. Can anyone help?

It can be a pain, but it's usually the device that's being picky. What's the device you are trying to get to work and what are the specific problems?

Unhappy

Ok, all I want to use is my printer (epson 777) and camera (hp photosmart 315). They are both usb. The printer can go serial. Is that easier?I dont have a choice with the camera.
