Why fetchmail asks for a SMTP server when working with IMAP? ??

Hi folks,

I configured fetchmail to downlaoad my gmail account mails.


poll imap.gmail.com protocol IMAP
user "07anis@gmail.com" is anish here
password 'XXXXXXXX'
#folder 'INBOX'
fetchlimit 1
keep
ssl

this is my exact configuration in .fetchmilrc configuration file.
but when i execute fetch -v command it shows

Why fetchmail asks for a SMTP server when working with IMAP? ??

please guide me what mistake i did in my configuration file???

because that's how fetchmail gets the emails into your actual mail file. SMTP should not be seen simply as a server you send emails to, but a way to move mail forwards using a push mechanism. fetchmail gets email, *pulling* it from imap etc, but then it still needs to *push* it somewhere, so it gives it to the local smtp server which is usually running by default for local mail only, and that will generally write it to /var/spool/mail/username or similar. That last bit is not fetchmails problem here, but the smtp server.

SMTP
To add verbage that MAY make it more clear: it is the LOCAL SMTP server, that one that fetchmail SENDS to, not the remote one it FETCHES from, that appears to be down or not responding.

Waht mail server are you running on your local machine?

I can able to download mails using Fetchmail.. now :-)

set bouncemail

poll pop.gmail.com protocol POP3 user "07anis@gmail.com" there with password "XXXXXX"

this is the exact code which i used.
