If this is your first time setting up a mail server, I'd suggest something like qmailrocks which will guide you step by step how to setup everything including SMTP, POP3, IMAP, Anti-virus, Anti-Spam, Secure Services etc etc:
I've been running one of these setup's since Christmas, processing 64,000+ emails per month and she hasn't skipped a beat
EDIT: I'm running on a Fedora Core 6 server, and qmailrocks SUSE instructions are "coming soon". If you haven't got your heart set on SUSE, then qmailrocks has guides for Fedora, Red Hat, FreeBSD, Debian (Ubuntu Server), Slackware and Solaris.
