Why does Tor not properly work?

When I download and run Tor/Vidalia on my Ubuntu Linux it starts and says that I am connected to the network but never starts firefox so I can access it, I can't find any other forum with answers to this problem so I thought I could ask for help here.

Start Firefox manually, change proxy settings to use the TOR port, visit https://check.torproject.org/ in your browser and tail the TOR server log?
