sounds like a /etc/X11/ xorg.conf or XF86Free.conf issue
1) look at that file and see if it is trying resolutions outside your laptops specification.
2) my memory is failing me...but vidtune I think will allow you to pick better resolutions.
3) during the boot up process...with grub you can edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst kernel line to specify a vga=normal ....try it and if it does not work post back your output of the xorg or xf file and your grub kernel line depending on what is failing for you
