whoops! Did I install Ubuntu *twice*? If so, should I remove one, and how?

Hello everyone

I've got 3 instances of Linux running successfully on my machine. In order of installation, they are a)Ubuntu, b)Linux Mint, and c)Puppy Linux.

Here is what my bootup screen looks like:

Linux Mint and Puppy appear once each, but Ubuntu appears twice! Does anyone know why this is happening... maybe I accidentally installed Ubuntu twice?

If I did, how can I remove it?

No, it just seems that one has a newer kernel than the other one.

There are different methods from removing/hiding older kernels.

Be careful though...messing with GRUB can hurt.

It looks like you installed it once, and then had a kernel update. It is quite normal, and recommended, to keep some number of old kernels available in the boot menu in case there turns out to be some problem with the most recent one. I'm sure that Ubuntu has, somewhere, an option for the number of old kernels to retain.

To add to that, the kernel is one binary file, typically sub-gigabyte sized, likely about 500M. Not horrific that you can load using the older kernel, and on most systems also not a horrific size trade-off to keep. As far as the root file system, I do not believe they keep different ones.

kernels are usually about 5mb.
the accompanying initram disk can be about 20mb
