What are the checksum.md5 files for?

Hey, when I go do download a new Linux distro, along with the iso's is a file called CHECKSUM.MD5. What is that for and do I need it?

that's a file you can use with the MD5 program to verify whether the ISO you just downloaded is intact, or is corrupted in some way, before you burn it to CD.
