Warning: Unable to open an initial console

Currently Running Redhat 7.2 with 2.4.9-21 kernel. Rebooted the system yesterday and on boot up it locks with error message stating:

"Warning: unable to open an initial console"

Only things that have recently changed on the system are NFS server, and also installed Ximian Gnome. Would either of those caused the error? Any suggestions on resolving it? I have tried to go back to an earlier kernel, but the same error occurs. So I believe it is not kernel related. I have been able to use linux rescue from the Redhat install cd also.

Thanks for your help.
