Absolutely you NEED usb_core.

ehci_hcd and
ohci_hcd are the drivers for the USB port.. One is for usb 1.x the other is for usb 2.x ports. without usb_core and those other modules loaded your usb port has no driver to even function...
unless maybe those are compiled directly into the kernel.. are you using any other usb devices ? keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc.. ?
