Absolutely you NEED usb_core.

usbcore               112644  5 usb_storage,usbhid,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd
ehci_hcd and ohci_hcd are the drivers for the USB port.. One is for usb 1.x the other is for usb 2.x ports. without usb_core and those other modules loaded your usb port has no driver to even function...

unless maybe those are compiled directly into the kernel.. are you using any other usb devices ? keyboard, mouse, joystick, etc.. ?

Ahh guess I should have read all the follow up posts more closely as well.. just now caught the part about udev...
