Upgrading Slackware 12.2 kernel - Slackware can no longer "see" ethernet card.

Hello

I followed this guide to upgrade my Slackware 12.2 kernel:

http://muaythaimaster74.blogspot.com...re-kernel.html

I upgraded to the latest stable kernel: 2.6.39.3

The computer is running fine. The system works. Its actually running a little faster than before. I guess thats because the kernel got compiled for my particular processor (Pentium III)

But i can't get a network connection, ifconfig shows only the loopback address (127.0.0.1)

I had network access before the kernel upgrade.

The ethernet card is a D-Link PCI, so it shouldt have good linux support.

Any help is greatly appriciated.

Kind regards Mads

Is that the complete output from lsmod? If so, I'm expecting more than just your nic isn't working. =D

Good luck. ;-)

Yes thats the complete output of lsmod

Everything seems to work fine.

Its just the NIC.

What should lsmod have, more than fuse ?

Wow.

I presume that lsmod is listing all the currently installed kernel modules.

How do i add kernel modules ?

I think the easiest way of solving this is to reinstall slackware 12.2, do a lsmod and save the output.

Then upgrade the kernel again and add the missing modules.

Would this be a good solution for this problem ?

Well, give this a try.

Code:
# modprobe r8169
That should load the appropriate module if it's available.

Good luck. ;-)

looks like you are missing your ethernet driver. Whenever one upgrades to a newer kernel one needs to know the drivers needed for their system for the new kernel to work
By running the huge kernel and doing a lsmod will give you an idea what drivers you system requires. For the new kernel to boot without a initrd will need the fs drivers and the hardrive drivers built into the kernel. all other drivers can be built as modules. hopes this helps

I just want the ethernet to work. all other stuff is running great.

I can't load the r8169 module.

Where do i get this module if it isent included with the kernel ?

Kind regards Mads Nielsen

go to /usr/src/linux and rerun make menuconfig. Look under drivers/net and try to find your network card driver, it may also be under staging drivers, once you find your driver make sure it is selected as a module or built into the kernel, then will have to recompile kernel again
