unable to login to tty1 tty2 ...

(Distro: Xubuntu)I'm able to login to my X session, and sudo password is also working; however, when I switch to tty1 or 2 3... it doesn't allow me to login....

Code:
Oct 22 18:36:08 computer1 login[1216]: pam_unix(login:auth): authentication failure; logname=LOGIN uid=0 euid=0 tty=/dev/tty1 ruser= rhost= user=john
Oct 22 18:36:10 computer1 login[1216]: FAILED LOGIN (1) on '/dev/tty1' FOR 'john', Authentication failure
Oct 22 18:36:22 computer1 login[1216]: FAILED LOGIN (2) on '/dev/tty1' FOR 'john', Authentication failure
oh, and /etc/security/access.conf is commented out completely

Could you explain it little more, how are you switching between tty's? and what protocol you're using i.e. ssh or what? Is password OK?
There could be a pb with entries in /etc/hosts.equiv or .rhosts, if you're remotely accessing this machine.

I switch to tty's from the gui (ctrl+alt+F1..F6). No problem login in remoteletly through ssh.
