You will have to be a little more detailed about what you did and what you want to accomplish. Maybe it is just not knowing the correct terminology but, downloading Ubuntu isn't going to do anything so have you put the iso on a DVD or on a flash drive and installed it to a partition on your hard drive? If you are using a computer built in 2001, it is not likely that it will run well with a standard Ubuntu even if you get it installed. So is it installed to your computer hard drive? are you actually able to boot it? Can you post some information about your hardware, specifically the amount of RAM and the CPU? And also, be more specific about what you mean by getting a server to send emails. Have you a server set up on your machine or are you simply trying to access an email account in a web browser?

To answer your question yancek.i installed ubuntu 12.04 from a dvd onto the hard drive(full install)on my second partition.i'm able to boot up and get into the program, even downloaded some music on rymemusicbox, and get internet connected.but when i try to open up firefox,it says,'can't find server, try again'.and i've tried everything, even downloading an ubuntu server from online on a usb into my c drive, but still nothing.before i downloaded ubuntu i tried to install windows 7 professional, but it was unable to do it,just too old and doesn't have the right software installed, plus i've only got 1mb of ram,and 2.00ghz intel(r)pentium processor,so it maybe just inadequate.in fact if there's no way to correct it i'd like to know how to remove it from my computer.thanks yancek, regards scott

A few questions to help diagnose this:

Is Firefox trying to connect to a specific website on startup? I know of no reason why Firefox would be looking for any kind of server other than a web server at a website somewhere out there on the inner webs.

Open a terminal and run these commands, then post the output here:

Code:
ping google.com
ping 8.8.8.8
ifconfig -a <------------you may have to use sudo to do this one
cat /etc/network/interfaces <------------(you may also have to use sudo for this one).
Be sure to surround any command outputs with "code" tags for readability, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button to the right of the "Post Quick Reply" button at the bottom of the reply window.

Thanks for your enquiry. When i've got into ubuntu i've brought up firefox and it says can't find server. Ubuntu something is written in the browser and i've changed that to google & hotmail without success.when i was on a while ago it said,'problem in jockey-gtk' then it said,'this is not an official ubuntu package, please remove third party package & try again.'then it said 'failed to retrieve share list from server'.i was wondering when i installed it,a window opened up towards the end saying something like,'do you want to transfer files etc across from other??can't remember the rest.but i didn't click yes,so was wondering now whether i had to do that to get into the server from the first main core that i have xp professional downloaded on.i couldn't download win 7 prof on that core because it said the bios needed to be updated.but it seems toshiba don't have an update for such an old computer anymore.but i'll try what you've suggested, got nothing to lose, thanks from scott

Do you mean you installed it on your second partition? Downloading it to a partition on your hard drive won't do anythng itself.

downloading an ubuntu server from online on a usb into my c drive
Not sure what you are trying to do here? Are you trying to download the Ubuntu server version so that you can install it to a partition on your hard drive? Why are you putting anything on your 'C drive', that's a windows naming convention and a Linux OS won't run on a windows filesystem.

Quote:
'this is not an official ubuntu package, please remove third party package & try again.'then it said 'failed to retrieve share list from server
Were you online and trying to download some software? If so, what? Post a link.
You seem to be able to boot Ubuntu, correct? Try starting firefox from a terminal, open the terminal and just type: firefox, hit the Enter key and when firefox opens try to go to google or some other site. If you have the same problem, shut down firefox and take a look at the output in the terminal. It might give some clue as to what is happening and you can post that here.

Thanks again for your questions.i'll try and be more clearer. I downloaded ubuntu to my second partition.i've done this before on a toshiba a2 and it worked perfectly.the disk tells you that you can run it alongside windows.the other apache 2 server i downloaded only because i thought it was missing a server, because firefox kept telling me,'server can't be found'.but i'm more confident now that its because the bios is outdated and that's why the server can't be found? Not sure of that theory, but when i tried to download windows 7 professional off the disk i have,it came back saying unable to install until bios is updated.that request is just too difficult for me,so that's why i proceeded to install ubuntu again, because it had worked on my other toshiba.i just wish i could get somebody in melbourne to come around and show me personally what to do.because i'm not as knowledgable technically as i'd like to be.but i've been unable to get online after booting up ubuntu, even though i'm connected to the internet.in the browser of firefox its had written ubuntu.google.com,and i've tried sudo ifconfig=a & ping 8.8.8.8,& ping google, but nothing gets me in.but listen if there's no way i can fix this, how can i uninstall it? Thanks again, scott

So you have Ubuntu installed and functioning, correct? You can also boot your windows install, also correct? I'm not sure where apache comes into play. You don't need to have apache installed to access a server, the server would be on the other end, google for instance. If I undersand correctly, your problem is that you cannot connect to the internet with the firefox browser, is that right? But your system shows a valid internet connection? Are you sure you have an internet connection because if you can't get to any site from your browser and can't ping sites such as google, ??? You might try posting the output from an Ubuntu terminal of: sudo ifconfig

Also, have you tried downloading any software from the software center? Does that fail?

With regard to getting help, there are a number of members here from the Melbourne area so scroll down this page to the section Linux Users Group and post something there asking for help. Please do not post personal information such as email or telephone numbers.

If you want to replace it, all you need to do is install over it. You can tell the installer to overwrite the contents of the chosen partition.

Before you do that, though, try this: If you installed from the Ubuntu Live CD, boot to the Live CD, then try to connect to the internet from the Live CD (that is, without installing to your computer). If you can connect okay from it, that indicates that the problem is indeed something in the install. If you can't, there may be something else going on outside of your computer.

To remove as many variables as possible, do this using a wired connection, even if you have to borrow an ethernet cable and set the computer on a TV tray while you test.

No. You don't need a server installed, you need to connect to the internet to download from the Software Center.

No, that would be a bad idea as 13.04 is no longer supported. 12.04 will have support until April, 2017. If you were able to connect to the internet at the library and cannot connect from your home then something maybe wrong with your router/modem. Posting the output of the commands suggested above in post 4 might help. Some info on your wired/wireless hardware might help.

Thanks frank for your advice and yancek.i believe my wireless prepaid modem didn't download onto my ubuntu partition, although it showed up as being 'connected',and that's what threw me.but the 12.04 i've installed wont allow any updates from the net nor downloads, because i tried a google browser without success and some logins for allowing some music wouldn't download either.so it seems to be a bad install.as i mentioned i couldn't download windows 7 professional on the main partition because it says the bios was too old and needed updating.i don't have any contact with anyone with a 'wired connection',so can't try your suggestion frank.i remember when i downloaded it onto another toshiba,it wouldn't update anything, and i never tried downloading anything.but honestly i've grown sick of all the hassle with it. I've got windows on other computers so i think i'll just stick when them, and that'll keep my computing attitude still healthy.thanks for all your help and suggestions.
