UltraBay CD/DVD stopped working

I have an IBM ThinkPad R50 with an UltraBay CDW/DVD drive and a couple weeks back the drive stopped working. I asked my resident guru to check it out, it worked fine for him, but once I got it home, the drive worked ONCE, then stopped again. Any advice (short of buy a new laptop)? I'm running Ubuntu 8.1, but the troubles began when I was still using 8.04.

You could look at the logs in '/var/log' to see if you can get some hints or directions to pin point possible areas for you to look at.
