in "Printers" you click link of the printer, then -> "Administration" where you will find an entry about allowing users to print, I don't know exactly the name of the menus in English because I have German menus.

I think the problem is at the Vista end, when trying to print from Ubuntu it says data is RAW and hangs whereas from XP it gives data type as NTEMF and prints
I can't help you with Vista, luckily I've never used Vista. You may search with google for the errormessage.

When HP device manager starts it says "no installed HP devices found". so I go to CUPS 1.5.0 Administration>add printer. It says "UNAUTHORIZED enter your username......" but there is nowhere to do that. Can I use a sudo command?
As I said before my printer appears correctly under "printers"

Normally in Cups there pops a window up where you can enter the password for root. But since Ubuntu doesn't use root, you should look at Ubuntu's documentation.

I don't know where to look, can you help with that? Do you think I need to re-install HPLIP, if so can you advise how to do that. I can transfer documents to Windows via Network Public and print them there but would like to use Ubuntu if I can

Is this printer attached to the computer?
I'm using debian & it loads hp printers by default.
Try this open web browser & try to print from it

I am trying to use a network printer attached to a vista desktop via SAMBA. Firefox tried to find a local printer but there is none.
