ubuntu 11.10 problem using hplip with acer aspire ONE

the HP device manager says "No installed HP devices found" after using CUPS Web Interface, but it correctly identifies my printer as HP Deskjet d2400 Series, hpcups 3.11.12. The printer reacts but will not print anything. The printer works OK with windows XP

Hello danddfaver, welcome to the forum,

when you configure a printer with cups you'll have to configure which users are allowed to print. Did you do that?

Could you please describe in some detail how you've configured the printer via webinterface?

I set up the printer via desktop tools, printers, network printer, windows printer via SAMBA, smb://, browse.
This gave me MSHOME and found my printer. I then selected HP and cursored through hundreds of printers until I found mine, selected the indicated CUPS driver, went forward it said "printer added" and offered to print a test page, but would not print this or anything else!

How do you configure users?

Thanks for your help Derek

Ah, your printer is shared on a Windows-PC?

Did you check on the Windows-PC if the printjob is shown in the queue?

Configuring users is done via the webinterface of cups. In the administration-section, there's a point for allowing users to print.

Yes I'm sorry I should have mentioned that.

The print job shows in the queue, all the notices up to "document printed" show the printer reacts but does not print. it says "remote downlevel doc" status "printing" then hangs

When the cups webinterface shows the printjob in the queue (and it is not printed) you have most likely a permission-problem. Did you find the section in the cups-webinterface where you can configure the users?

No I don't know how to configure users, under jobs it says USER withheld. I am using a dual-boot WUBI in case this matters

Have you added your user name to
"lp" under "/etc/group"?

Afaik with cups it should not matter if one is in the lp-group.

@danddfaver: you'll need the sudo command because you need root-permissions in order to change systemfiles.

Afaik = "as far as I know"

Membership in the lp group is necessary if you want to use the lpd (line printer daemon) but as far as I know cups permissions don't depend on the lp group.

It would be good if you post a short sketch of your network. I'm not sure about the permissions of the Windows-PC.

Here is a description which probably applies to your setup http://excess.org/docs/linux_windows_printing.html you should read it.

You said
"Did you find the section in the cups-webinterface where you can configure the users?"
I did not find that section, can you tell me where it is?
I think the problem is at the Vista end, when trying to print from Ubuntu it says data is RAW and hangs whereas from XP it gives data type as NTEMF and prints
