If it happens the same way everywhere, I’d suspect a problem with the keyboard itself. Do you have an external keyboard you can try?
Yes, I can try this weekend (not home next few days)This problem, cursor jumping, also occurs on another laptop (Dell Precision) with Win 7 Pro. I must have static in
my fingers.
Try using a mouse and see if there is a difference.
Also have a look in your system settings for your trackpad and see if there is a setting called "Disable touchpad while typing" (there is in Mint MATE but I'm not sure if Xubuntu has one), or similar. Enable that and see if it has any effect.

This has been a frustrating problem for a long
time on 2 computers. In the exercise of discussion
on this thread it occurred to me that the fact of
seeing the same problem on 2 Dell computers was
significant.
Checked with the Dell forum & Eureka!, the problem
is endemic with Dell & the solution is ridiculously simple.
Just operate on battery alone!
Apparantly, there is some sort of grounding or ground loop situation.
Thanks to all who offered help, appreciate this community.

Now I wouldn't have guessed that. I wonder if there are any solutions that could involve properly grounding the computer or insulating yourself.
Do you have a link to the forum thread where it is discussed?
I too have found this on my Dell Latitude E6320 which runs Slackware. I can't use it plugged in, the mouse cursor jumps everywhere or doesn't move at all, it has to be on battery only. It's a hardware issue with some Dells.

Glad you found an answer, and thanks for posting the link...I now know what Dell laptops not to buy!
'Twer me, I'd be requesting a refund...just sayin'
Thanks for that. Some folk appear to be finding a solution towards the end of the thread with a program called TouchFreeze that disables the touchpad while you're typing in text. I assume that it's a Windows program. Did you have a look for the equivalent Linux setting that I mentioned in post #9?
