Does anyone know how to install linux from a USB? When trying to google this question, I just get a lot of answers on how to install linux ON a USB. I have a laptop computer who's CD-ROM drive has gone to crap so I was wondering if there's a way to install linux straight off a 1GB pen drive. I have a Linux (Fedora) CD and a Linux boot disk, who's boot sector image I've copied on to the pen drive. So the computer will boot to the pen drive, and I actually have all the files from the first installation CD on the pen drive as well. But there's no command prompt on boot and the options for installing linux are only limited to off the CD-ROM, off the HDD, or off some net connection.
What Linux distribution are you trying to install? The procedure may vary slightly.
Generally speaking, having booted to the USB device your motherboard is translating it as a hard drive, thus you should be able to make use of the HDD installation method.
Many distributions offer their own explanations as to how to install via a pen drive. Go to distrowatch.com and select their 'search' option at the top right hand of the screen, then fill in what you are looking for.
Fedora Core 1 that came with the book "Linux for non-Geeks". The Hard drive option didn't let me access the pendrive, only the primary hard disk. I guess I may have to download another distro.
