Hey another question, I am trying to learn the nuances of K3b and it just will not allow me to burn a cd. I have tried it as root and as a regulat user and I get the same "unknown" error (hello Mac). This is what I get:

can you mount the cdrom?
Is it mounted before you try to burn?
Have you tried to burn the disk from the command line ?
Has your cdrom been detected by the os

try changing the device to dev=/dev/sg0 in the cdrecord command

1. I can mount the cdrom (if the cd is formatted, i.e. a blank cd can not be mounted because there is no file system)

2. yes it is mounted prior to burning in that the os recognizines the cd is present and that drive is present

3. don't know how to burn from the command line lol

4. see 2.

5. I have no idea that that changing of the device even means lol

Ok , if you go into the /etc directory and do a

ls cdrom -la
what is the output ? (It should be a symbollic link to a device in the /etc directory. ie sg0)

if you see the link as cdrom > sg0, then you can use sg0 as your device directly which will eliminate a few problems if they lie before this point.

This will mean that you can now mount the cdrom from the /mnt directory using the command

>umount /cdrom
>mount -t iso9660 /dev/sg0 /cdrom

If this can be achieved then the k3b program is trying to acess your cdrom via a different link (I think!) which is using cyl sec head 0,0,0

If the above worked , you can pick a directory and test if it will work via command line.

Say i was to record a directory with the name burn.

mkisofs -v -r -graft-points 'cd-burn=./burn' | cdrecord -v -multi dev=/dev/sg0 speed=10 -data -

This will create a directory called cd-burn on the root directory of the cd containing the contents of your actual burn directory.

Try the above with a rewritable and see if it works, to erase the disk use

cdrecord -v dev=/dev/sg0 speed=10 -blank=all

Hope this helps , also trying to determine where the problem is ie k3b or cdrecord etc ..
