Need help,
I'm looking for the best way for a Linux beginner to install Snort.
I'm a windows user learning Linux, I've played with Mint, Ubuntu, kali, and Security Onion. I'm a Network Security Analyst and need to be able to use Snort to test rules, run pcap's, and as a sensor at home for general practice.
I followed a tutorial off of youtube that seemed very good but am getting an error-
"snort: error while loading shared libraries: libdnet.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
This should be pretty close to the complete list of commands I ran:
sudo apt*get install flex bison build*essential checkinstall libpcap*dev
libnet1*dev libpcre3*dev libmysqlclient15*dev libnetfilter*queue*dev
iptables*dev
wget
https://libdnet.googlecode.com/files/libdnet*1.12.tgz
tar xvfvz libdnet*1.12.tgz
./configure "CFLAGS=*fPIC
make
sudo checkinstall
sudo dpkg *i
libdnet_1.12*1_amd64.deb and sudo ln *s /usr/local/lib/libdnet.1.0.1
/usr/lib/libdnet.1
Download files from:
https://www.snort.org/downloads
daq-2.0.5.tar.gz
snort-2.9.7.3.tar.gz
tar xvfvz daq*2.0.5.tar.gz
cd daq*2.0.5
./configure
make
sudo checkinstall
sudo dpkg *i daq_2.0.2*1_amd64.deb
Download snort rules:
snortrules-snapshot-2973.tar.gz
tar xvfvz snort*2.9.6.1.tar.gz
cd snort*2.9.6.1
./configure
make
sudo checkinstall
sudo dpkg *i snort_2.9.7.3*1_amd64.deb
/usr/sbin/snort
sudo ldconfig -v
snort -V
The "snort -V" is where I get the error at and here is the url where I watched the tutorial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVvS8Peb2fY
I did try "sudo apt-get install libdnet" I received this error "ERROR! dnet header not found" Any help with this or an updated tutorial that can be followed to the "T" without errors would be great.
Thank you for your time.
