Exclamation Trouble installing java on firefox 1.5

I am running SuSE 9.3 linux on my desktop, and upgraded my firefox to version 1.5 some months ago. Everything has been working fine, however java was not working. Yesterday I downloaded jre version 1.5.0_06 and installed it according to the directions, but have not not gotten java to work. In fact, now when I get to a page with java, the firefox browser closes.

My firefox is installed under /opt/firefox
My java is installed under usr/java/jre1.5.0_06

After installing I created a link to the java in the firefox plugins directory and I think that is where the problem may lie.
The directions are confusing as they keep referring to the mozilla directory, but my firefox is not running under that directory.

What file should be linked to firefox, and where should it go? the directions were written for the command line ( ln -s /usr/....so . ) (Note the period at the end). Doesn't dragging the file and creating a link do the same thing?

I got frustrated at this point and tried creating links in all the plugin directories I could find, but to o avail.

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer...

The java plugin is named 'libjavaplugin_oji.so' and there should be a link to that file in your
'$HOME/.mozilla/plugins' ------- for current user or
'/opt/firefox/plugins' --------- for all users, assuming that firefox was installed in that directory, as you said.

So a proper command to set up the link would be:
Code:
ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/
or
Code:
ln -s usr/java/jre1.5.0_06/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /opt/firefox/plugins
I guess this path to 'libjavaplugin_oji.so' is right, otherwise you have to adjust it, by searching for the name and use the correct path.
