Tried resetting linux mint 18 password but now I get a black screen after login

I tried to reset my login password following these instructions https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/339 but now when I enter the new password I get flashed a black screen (too fast to read the sentence) and then sent back to the login screen.

Any help would be great.

if you have gotten past your password setting via your instructions, and are now getting a gui login and it keeps kicking you out, you can switch tty's
Code:
ctrl+alt+F[1-x]
to get a different tty and login root if that is even possible with mint, then just issue your change password command for your user.
Code:
passwd userName

I've already ran "sudo passwd userName" from another account that I can log into (after following those instructions that I probably shouldn't have) and the same thing. I type the password and it waits for 5 seconds then a dark screen appears with some text for .5 a second and back to the login screen. This only happens on the account I tried to reset the password on.

It might be a keyboard problem (for some reason the keyboard for the text console where you changed the password isn't the same as the keyboard set in the GUI).

Try the procedure again, but this time set the password to the single character t

I'm 100% sure it's not a keyboard problem. If only I had a way to screenshot the text that appears for half a second after hitting enter.

Can you please try it once before being 100% sure?

Whenever someone says, "This is not a keyboard problem", it's usually a keyboard problem.

Try the tutorial again and now set the password to only a couple of letters without any numbers or special characters.
