SUSE 10.1 seems to be running slow

Actually i have question about my suse 10.1 which i have had for about a month now. The problem i have noticed is that most of the time it takes a while to load a program or open a file. I am currently running 1g Ram and Intel P4 2.8. In windows there you can check to see which programs are running in the background and you can removed them from running if you simply don't need them. I was reading in Linux Wiki that some distros do run a lot of things in background because thats how they are setup. My question is if my suse is running background programs which i really don't need then is there a way that I can remove them. If there is can anyone please tell me how.
