SuSE 9.1 running very slow

First hello to everyone!

I've tried many distros but SuSE claims to be the slowest. I am using SuSE 9.1 but i had the same problem in 9.0. I think that I found what the problem is but i don't know how to solve it. I saw that message (a bit accidentally), booting the system:

*******************************************
The DMA on your hard drive is turned off.
It may really slow down the FSCK process.
*******************************************

I found the DMA setting in YaST ant it is ON.
Still these warnings do appear.
How to turn the DMA ON. You are my last hope.

the only way i know how to do this is with the hdparm command.

I think (though I tend to screw up syntax so check the man page for this command)

hdparm -d 1 /dev/whatever

you need to do this as root, and as this is a sbin, you must either sign in directly as root or do su - , not su to get the command.
