Sound config issues

I am brand new to Linux, just installed for the first time today. Using Mandrake 8.1(it was free). I am trying to configure a ESS Technology ES1969 Solo-1 Audiodrive sound card. sndconfig finds it but says it is not supported at this time. using /lspci it shows up. Someone in another thread said to look at /sbin/lsmod which I did but I dont know what Im looking for.
I think I have to manually configur it, but not sure. I am pretty good with DOS, Windows and Cisco Routers but Linux is new ground.
Any Help is greatly appreciated.

Jason
