Total newbie, please be gentle.

Do I need the smb protocol to use samba from my win2kpro box? If so, how do I obtain?

All help is appreciated.

you mean does your win2k box need it...no. Just the linux box does. Define shares and settings for your network in smb.conf and smapasswd -a user to add users then fire up samba and you should be good to go.

If you need samba for your linux box obtain it here --> http://www.samba.org

linux_terror is correct. However, there was a typo. To add a user it's 'smbpasswd -a user', NOT 'smapasswd -a user' .
