slack won`t start.

well i am new to linux and installed slackware 10. i partitioned the harddrive and everything installed fine but when i got to the config after the full install i couldn`t get the part where it wants you to make a boot disk work or LILO. those were the only problems. then i finished up the rest of the config settings and rebooted as told. now when i boot up all i get is a black screen with "error loading operating system."

help?

Slack uses lilo.
When you turn on the machine do you get the lilo boot screen before the black screen?
If not you didn't get the boot loader installed correctly.
Put the install disk back in and re-install lilo.
When you turn on the machine you should get a screen asking you to choose your boot Kernel or OS. That's lilo. I haven't installed Slack for a couple of months. Is there a recovery option on the install disk? At any rate you'll need the boot loader installed correctly.

If not a dual boot with windows machine you can install lilo on the MBR. If you can't get it installed right, then post again.

i tried reinstalling lilo in the slack install and it wouldn`t do it. i don`t have windows at all. i removed all partitions and gave everything but 500mb partitioned for slack.

is there any other way to install lilo or get booted into slack?

also i tried lilo on the floppy first it didnt work and i tried the harddrive i think whichever the first option in the list was that didn`t work. i didn`t try MBR though since im not using windows or a dualboot should i try that then?

I'm not sure what you have wrong. When I install Slackware 10 I install lilo to the master boot record. Where are you installing lilo to?

Is your BIOS set to boot from that drive?

If you have made changes to the lilo.conf file then you will have to run lilo for the changes to take effect.

When you turn on the machine do you view anything other that a black sceen? Can you boot from a boot floppy?

It sounds like you just didn't get lilo installed right.

everything installed fine except when i was asked to make a bootdisk it would not read my floppy and kept saying there was a error so i skipped that. then i tried installing lilo i tried all 3 options all of them failed. what should i do i can get slackware to boot now by using "bareacpi.i root=/dev/hda1 noinitrd ro". i guess i just need lilo fixed.
