Question setting up local mail on FC4

I'd like to find out how to read local mail, and eventually set up a local mail server for my family. I don't have a domain -- and was hoping not to set one up at this point...

[1] I have yet to read any messages to ROOT. The old unix 'mail' program works quite well, but it's such a pain... Can I set up Thunderbird to read the ROOT mailbox? If so, what's the server name? I've used my computer name (linuxserver) and my local IP address, but no luck. Perhaps I'm doing it wrong...
[2] I've seen people praising all kinds of mail programs like Sendmail or Qmail and the like.
  • [a] I would like to know if I can set up my linux box to retrieve messages from RoadRunner and store them locally, then my wife and I can retrieve them with our mail programs.
[b] Without setting up a domain, can I set up mailboxes for my wife and daughters that they can check? I don't want to use RoadRunner for my kids until they're ready to wade through spam...

Hmmmmm.... How do you nest lists with vB code? How do I turn on HTML code in my post? Hmmmm.

Why don´t you

want to set up a domain name? You are probably going to have problems doing what you are describing if you do not do at least this.

On my linux distro I can log on as ´nobody´ to read my root mail (for some reason there is a problem doing this as root so the ´nobody´ account was created)
