Sendmail Installation

Can any one tell me how to install, configure and test Sendmail in Redhat Linux. I don't have yum installed on my system, so I cannot use yum install sendmail command. Please give me the step by step procedure. I am new to Linux.

Sendmail is available in the optical media of the distribution you have installed. Please give what RH version you are using. Is it old RH or the newer RHEL? If there is no yum installed, you can install and configure third party repositories for the same.

THIS LINK should give you information on configuring sendmail.

Also, provide more information why and for what purpose you want it to satisfy. This will help others help you pin point.

I am using Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5(Tikanga). Actually I installed a software on Linux OS with PHP as front-end,Java as back-end and sqlite as database. This software is about tracking and sending multiple mails at a time from local system. The software was installed successfully and also it is working fine. But it is not sending any mails. Instead it is giving error message as

Exception(s) encounterd while SMTP Dispathces for MailShot '110125_sample1'
1 Fatal/UNHANLDED Exception: null
java.lang.NullPointerException
at com.attract.imail3.javasmtp.SMTPThread.run(SMTPThread.java:172)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:595)

I am really not informed lot about java and can not help you out with it. But I would suggest you to test your sendmail installation first. And if your sendmail is working fine, then you will need to look into other issues.
By-the-way, how do you use java as backend?
