sendmail installation

I'm having trouble building sendmail. I get this error message after running 'sh Build':

/bin/sh: cc: command not found
make[1]: *** [depend] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/tars/sendmail-8.12.2/obj.Linux.2.2.14.i686/libsm'

I guess I need a compiler but I'm not sure where to start.
