screen resolution change in redhat

*RedHat 9 - KDE desktop enviroment
i'm trying to change my screen res from 800x600 to 1024x768. I opened the Display menu and changed it to what I needed, it told me to shut down (or stop X server) and restart and the settings will change. I restart and it stays @ 800x600, i've tried booting into Root and changing it- same outcome. I had no problem changing it in Mandrake 9, just in the new redhat...maybe I'm doing it wrong.
Also, I can't find the option to boot my linux drive into command line rather then auto starting X.

Thanks in advance.

Regarding the booting to the command line, edit your /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel from 5 to 3. That should do the job. (initdefault, I think)

A new addition to XFree86 version 4.3, which is included with RH9, is the X Resize, Rotate and Reflection tool xrandr as documented here. Just do a search for xrandr and it should take you to the section that discusses how to use this utility.
