cant change my screen resolution

just installed ububtu for the first time and cant change my screen resolution.no not from the change resolution tab under the system.i have dell 3000 dimension with a dell monitor, must be made in china, but as i said it has locked my screen to 640x480 and refresh rate is 60Hz.
i have updated a few packages with the updating utility Synaptic utility and also tried the command "sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`" for updating the kernal config module " hoping that its going to update my hardware config as i have installed ubuntu from a relatively old version.its about 6 months old and i am not sure if i should recompile the kernal from the scratch, which i have no idea how to do.so i request u gents to help me on my screen resolution and also how to compile kernal.ohh in case i forgot to mention, this is my first experience with linux.any help will be appriciated.
Thank you.

I think you just need to set your VertRefresh & HorizSync manually in your xorg.conf
