Samba 3.0.2a doesn't run

Decided to install a new samba and learn it from the start, the most updated one, but theres already a problem :P

After smbd and nmbd.. nothing happens. No output, no log files (that I can find in /var/log), and the programs are not running in ps :/

What could cause it from not executing properly and not giving an error or anything?
Any ideas would be nice =\

I installed 3.0.2a also and I'm still having problems trying to get it configured. I see the smb.conf file in the etc/samba directory but I can't seem to get to it. I also tried opening SWAT using the http://localhost:901 and I get an error message there as well.

I know I have Samba on the system but I can't seem to get any further than that. I was wondering if it is because I installed RedHat as a workstation instead of a server? I'm a newbie and I thought I'd be able to add services as needed.

Any advice would be appreciated. Tried everything in the help file so far. NADA....

Well if you compiled samba from source...it defaults to looking for the smb.conf file in /usr/lib (pretty strange)...and it will probably put your logs in /usr/var/samba or /var/samba...depending on how it's configured. If you have the smb.conf file in a different place, you should run smbd and nmbd with the -s option and specify the directory and name of it.

If all else fails, do a "locate smb.conf*" or a find / -name "smb.conf*" and look at where the logs are being placed.
