I have a dual boot system (XP and mandriva 2006). I am trying to get on the internet with my Sagem modem. Mandriva recognises the modem (which I assume is a good thing and I don't require a driver for it) but I can't get on to the internet. I have Tiscali broadband and an ADSL connection via a USB Sagem modem, I go though the set up but I still can't connect.
Can anyone tell me what is going wrong? I feel it's something simple.
I had the exact same setup and internet supplier as you, and was able to get the modem connected very easily following these steps...
You need to download this file from somewhere on the net...
ueagle-data-1.1.tar.gz
try a google search for...
eagle-usb.org/ueagle-atm/non-free/
Ideally if you have a usb flash drive or mp3 player you can save the file to it, to get it on your linux system from windows, though you should be able to get it through /mnt/windows when in Mandriva..
Extract / Unpack this file to your linux desktop. Make new a folder inside /lib/firmware called ueagle-atm and then copy the contents of the unpacked folder on your desktop in to this ueagle-atm folder. Now go to to 'Configure Your Computer' and add a new connection. Choose DSL and then select the USB device as the new modem. It should hopefully be straightforward from there.
I tried this. I found the file in question, downloaded it, unpacked it and renamed the folder ueagle-atm and copied it to the folder /lib/firmware (after creating the folder firmware in lib).
I then went on to configure your computer and went to the networking tab and clicked on set up new connection. I selected adsl connection and chose the sagem USB device and chose the tiscali UK connection and chose the DHCP option. All seemed to go through okay, it said that it had worked but the icon still said unconnected and I couldn't get the thing to work still.
Any other suggestions? Have I done anything incorrectly? Are there any other distro where this process is any easier?
Hi Rachel,
You seem to have done everything right, but you should choose the pppoa protocol for the adsl broadband you have, instead of dhcp. The modem is installed to linux which is why you had the seemingly succesful attempt, but can not synchronize with the internet. I suggest you delete the connection from the 'Configure Your Computer' section, then go through the steps again, making a new connection - but selecting pppoa. Mandriva is the easiest distro for your modem, although spending £30 on an ethernet connection adsl modem should mean almost completely automatic connection with any distro.
