running Ubuntu from a live CD

Hi; I'm pretty new at all this, but I've downloaded the PPC version of Ubuntu on a live CD and have it installed on an old G3 iBook. It runs, but boy is it slow! I'm wondering if I install the regular Ubuntu OS (not from the live CD) if it will speed up any. I kind of hate to lose my Mac OS, and was hoping to be able to do it this way. My CD drive makes kind of creaky noises when it looks for stuff on the Ubuntu CD. Is this normal? If the drive is not working well, it looks to me as if the thing wouldn't run at all. Can anyone advise me? Should I just scrap the Mac OS and download the thing permanently? Is Ubuntu really, really slow always?
Thanks,
Gatewood

I installed ubuntu on my sisters 700mhz laptop(i know not PPC) and it seems to fun pretty fast for her. Keep MacOSX if you want, but go ahead and try to install the regular Ubuntu(what can it hurt?). If you are worried about the cdrom, do a ftp install. When you begin the install select ftp rather than from the cd

OK, guess I'll use the regular install. I don't want to dual boot. So, I'll have to lose the OS X. Too bad. But I really do want the Linux. Wonder if Yellow Dog is faster? It doesn't have to be Ubuntu; I just wanted something fairly easy to install and compatible with PowerPC chips.
