ubuntu live cd smbmount

I got a laptop from a friend that no longer boots up. It was running XP and it crashed the other day. I was able to boot into the XP Recovery Console and cd the hard drive, but when I ran the DIR command, i saw some strange characters in the output. Anyhow, while in the Recovery Console, I tried to cd into the documents folder to confirm that I could see and salvage any files, but I kept getting an Access Denied message. In fact I got this message when I tried to CD into any directory from the Recover Console.

So I decided to try out the Ubuntu LiveCD. I booted up into Ubuntu accepting all the defaults, but for some reason the Xwindow system did not run properly, so I was relegated to using the full screen shell. At any rate, that's all I really need. I was able to mount the hard drive and cd into all of the directories and view the contents of some files using the vi or the cat command.

What I wanted to do next was mount a share drive I have on another system, and copy all the important documents to that share. Unfortunately, the smbmount command wasn't included in my live session. I couldn't figure out how to do it. My next thought was to share the root of the hard drive and access it from another computer. I modified the smb.conf file then ran the following command service smb restart. But it told me the service command was not found.

I'm at a loss at what to do next. I'm so frustrated because I'm very close to recovering the files and I can't figure out what to do next.

Thanks for your help.

by the way. The only info I have is that it's a Gateway Laptop runing 2.2Ghz Intel Celeron with 512MB ram and a 30GB hard drive.

Try to do it via ftp. I don't know if Ubuntu LiveCD comes with an ftp-server. If it does not, install an ftp-server on your other working system and upload the files from the "broken" laptop to it. I guess that you can use "ftp" at the command line on your Ubuntu liveCD right? (test if first).

thanks! I tried FTP and it worked, the only problem is that I couldn't figure out how to do mput recursively. Then I treid lftp and the command "mirror -r". It seemed to work fine, but after a while it started getting i/o errors.

Finally i found the smbclient command which works similar to ftp only it works on shares. This seem to do the trick. The only thing is the man page says it will copy everything over in binary mode. I don't suppose that will be a problem though. With smbclient, i was able to use mput recursively.

Thanks for your help, you got me on the right track.

You're welcome but, no need to thank me, you've found a very nice work around yourself ^_^. Credits goes to gSalsero -< =)
