RH7.2 and Partition Magic 8 problem?? Or stupidity

Hi

I don't know what's gone wrong here, but here goes.

My computer has 2 hdds, one for W98 and the other for W98 and RH7.2. Recently I had to reinstall W98 (reformatting c and lost access to RH in the process so that had to be installed again.

I used PM8 to create all the partitions on the second HDD including the ext3 for boot and ext3 for the rest, though RH does them anyway..

RH installed fine, using automatic partitioning, but PM8 came up with an error showing the whole of disk 2 as BAD and reported that the partition for the h: drive (first FAT 32 on disk 2) overlapped the extended partition. This is, I presume because the RH7.2 partitioning tool does not agree with PM8's partitions.

This meant that there was no way to get to any of the partitions on disk 2.

Using MBRwizard I cleared the partition on the drive, reinstalled everything and all went happily, apart from PM8 again not liking what RH did in its partitioning.

Last night, however things took a turn for the worse when I rebooted and instead of the grub graphical screen showing the Kernel x.x.x or DOS boot options I got a grub text screen that I've never seen before. grub > with various options listed after pressing the tab button. Woud typing "boot DOS" get

Using a W98 boot disk I can get to c:, etc, but when I type WIN to run windows I get a registry not found error and various other dire warnings. I presume this is, again a partitioning difficulty.

Now, my questions......

What's the best way to add RH7.2 to an existing W98 computer? Which partitioning tool is best? Is PM8 incompatible with RH7.2? Should /boot be at the start of disk 1 not disk 2? Is it possible to install RH7.2 into existing partitions or does it always have to create its own? I haven't ventured into druid or fdisk as the other install options for RH partitioning.

i would say the best way to do it, is the minimalist way.
use the linux program fdisk.

partiton the disk before you start ANY install or any operating system.
and do-not alter the partiton table dureing a linux install.

because with fdisk nothing is automatic, aslong as you dont make an error,
the software will not make an error, and because u are only using 1 tool, there
will be no incompatability's.

if you want to format before you begin installation (not needed, but u'know)
use the linux programs...

mkfs.ext3
mkfs.ext2
mkfs.msdos
mkfs.vfat

ect ect
