Question RH7.2 and Partition Magic Difficulty

Hopefully someone out there might have made this error of enthusiasm/judgement.

Machine is Dell D300 with 8Gb and 20Gb HDD. 8Gb is W98 and half of 20Gb. Rest of 20Gb for Linux.

I've just installed RH7.2 and let Druid create the partitions after doing it with Partition Magic 6.0 (yes I know I shouldn't have done.... now). Anyway, Partition magic sees disk 2 as bad and it can't be repartioned. Dos fdisk hangs.

Otherwise the computer starts happily into either W98 or RH.

Anyone know how to get to the partitions to start again? I haven't delved enough into Linux to know whether, or even how, to get into Druid, or other, and possibly clear the partitions that way.

Many thanks

Andy

uh

could be possibly some bad sectors...

yu can run chkdsk (dos) or scandisk as well...

in most distros the setup offers as part of a format to look for hard ware errors and such...

good luck

Hi
7.2 uses ext3 by default as I recall. Partition magic doesn't unerstand this FS thus sees it as a bad disk.

I think we need to clarify what you want to do. My impression is you've got a working RH and windoze, but wanted to do some tinkering with partitions. If you want to wipe the RH partitions and start again, there is an option at install time to use ext2, but obviously you lose the journaling ability. There should be a way to convert an ext3 to 2, its just a matter of changing the label/ partition table, but I don't know how to do it.

...continued

Kaiser_Sose, unfortunately PM doesn't give me the option of deleting the partition. Most of the options are greyed out. It's Error 120, btw.

I don't know if PM's just confused or what. There is a DOS utility in PM that gives access to the partition parameters, but I'm not sure what to change, if anything

I should have been more clear

I am dual booting XP and RH 7.2 on a single drive. When I was in XP, and within PM 7, I was able to see the Linux partitions

From there I deleted them. I had to do it in a certain order to work but eventually I deleted all the partitions and it bacame unused space

I then combined them all

Do you need PM 7

Also post here comp.os.linux.redhat - very knowledgabe people there

I've got PM6 that doesn't know about ext3.

What I'm trying to do is get to see all the partitions in PM6. I can see them all in Linux. At present PM sees all the 20Gb HDD as bad.

I checked out your ' Error 120 ' at Power Quest's site and I came up with two pages. Here and here . I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. Still no luck though. I'll try the partinfo route and see how it goes.

Plan A

As far as I can see I'll have to use Druid to remove the linux partitions since that's what created the partitions. So, where does Druid live in linux? It's in the install program for RH7.2 and you can delete partitions, but only to create new ones, not to then exit. Can a Druid 'rescue disk' be created to be run from a floppy???

Plan B

Otherwise, is there a 'nuclear' partitioning tool that will clear all partitions regardless of what's there so you can start again from scratch?

solved problem

OK I've done it. With ptedit, part of the partitionmagic suite, I could set the whole of the extended partion to be freespace (nuclear option ), i.e. clear the disk, and start again.

With PM6 the appropriate partitions could be created in ext2. In RH 7.2 custom setup these could then be reformatted as ext3.

PM6 still sees them as ext2.

or you can use disk druid in RH instalations disk without installling
agin OR use PM7.2 OR system cammander 2000
final version(not work with XP)
